Paris – January 2014

A trip to Paris never fails to satisfy! I love visiting the French capital, and this was my 9th visit to one of my favourite places in the world! Myself and my lovely friend Louise Tiler (a very talented designer), spent two nights in the city, primarily visiting the famous Maison et Objet exhibition and some of Paris’ beautiful design shops. We had long days with not much sleep so also managed to do a lot of walking around and eat nice food!

We set off on Monday from Leeds and after train cancellations and final delays we arrived in London very late, and had missed our Eurostar! Thank you to the people at Eurostar for transferring our ridiculously cheap tickets and letting us get the later train!

We had booked in to a hotel on the Rue D’Assas, which is south of the river in the 6th Arrondissement. It’s quite a quiet area but within walking distance of the famous latin quarter which is a great place to spend an evening. A 3 course meal accompanied by wine later, we spent a couple of hours walking along the river, and taking photos of some beautiful buildings at night.

Maison et Objet

On Tuesday we prepared ourselves for a lot more walking as we were visiting Maison et Objet, a huge trade show showcasing a multitude of different products from hundreds of exhibitors that had travelled in from all over the world. The show was vast, and it’s always a pleasure to see beautiful products, and secretly plan things to buy when I eventually have my own house! One of the most stand out exhibition spaces was that from Kare. The stand was huge! Check out the picture below from one end of their space.

Other companies that stood out for me were Ferm Living, Atelier LZC and Mapoesie

After the show we went for a much needed meal and a sit down, before braving the cold and drizzle for a walk up to the Eiffel Tower! It looks beautiful at night and as we were there at 11pm, we got to see it alight with hundreds of sparkling lights!

We spent a while on Tuesday night marking some shops we had heard about on our map, ready to visit on our last day. Thanks to Igor Josif (of Happy Interior Blog) for giving me some tips!

Wednesday morning saw us go to the Sacre Coeur. The view from the top of the steep steps leading up to it never gets boring, and it’s fascinating to see the city from up high.

Shopping in Paris

Finally, we spent the afternoon wandering around the beautiful shops tucked away down some of Paris’ beautiful backstreets.

First up, we visited Colonel. Colonel sells beautiful geometric lampshades, wooden furniture, textiles and some stationery. Expect bright colour and clean cut products!

Secondly we found The Collection, which sells a range of beautiful high end wallpapers from the likes of Deborah Bowness, amongst smaller items such as stationery by Tamasyn Gambell, and kitchen textiles.

The penultimate shop we visited was Merci. I loved it as soon as I saw a miniature  Fiat outside! The shop is spread over 3 floors and also has a cafe and restaurant. You can purchase functional travel accessories, beautiful clothes as well as home interior products. I’d highly recommend a visit!

Last but not least, we visited Fleux. Time was getting a bit tight by this point, so we didn’t have as much time to spend here as we would have liked. Fleux is split over 3 properties, all either adjacent or opposite each other, not far from the Hotel de Ville Metro stop. Expect anything from beautiful geometric napkins to Orla Kiely wallpaper. It would be a fabulous place to buy some really special presents for friends or relatives.

Find it at: 39 & 52 Rue Sainte  Croix de la Bretonnerie, 75004, Paris.

We arrived home exhausted but both feeling motivated and inspired to spend some time working on new lines for our own products!
